Gold Fields Australia Pty Limited has announced plans to build one of the world’s largest hybrid renewable energy plus storage projects at the Granny Smith gold mine in the state of Western Australia. Gold Fields Australia, headquartered in Perth, Australia provides management and administrative services to Granny Smith gold mine. The Granny Smith gold mine was discovered in 1979 by Ray Smith. The mine is now abandoned but still contains the processing plant which is used by other nearby gold mines.
The hybrid renewable energy plus storage system will consist of 8 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and 2-MW/1-MWh battery system, which will be coupled with a 24.2 MW natural gas power plant. The solar-plus-battery system is forecast to reduce fuel consumption by more than 10%. Aggreko plc has been contracted to build and manage the new renewable energy plus storage system. Aggreko supplies power generation equipment and is headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland.
