Hovis Ltd produces flour and bread and is headquartered in High Wycombe, England. The company specializes in high wheatgerm whole meal flour and delivers 6.5 million loaves of bread every week across the UK and Ireland. Hovis is owned by The Gores Group and Premier Foods. The Gores Group is a global private equity firm, headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Premier Foods manufactures food and is headquartered in St. Albans, England.
Hovis has begun using electric vehicles (EVs) in its United Kingdom (UK) delivery fleet. The company is using two 7.5 ton FUSO eCanter trucks for all deliveries in London. The FUSO eCanter truck is manufactured by Mitsubishi and can travel up to 60 miles on a single charge. Hovis’ move to EVs will reduce greenhouse gas emission and noise pollution across the UK.
Hovis energy conservation policies have also reduced two million road miles through improved vehicle routing. The company has also announced plans to change its packaging in an effort to encourage customers to reduce the use of plastic bread bags.
In May 2018, the Lord Mayor published the London Environment Strategy which emphasizes the importance of energy efficient buildings and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. In my opinion, the strategy will eventually provide subsidies for EVs and/or fees for combustion engine vehicles traversing this great city. I applaud Hovis being proactive in energy conservation and greenhouse gas reduction programs.
