Five Largest Onshore Wind Farms

The cost to generate electricity from wind farms is now cheaper than any form of fossil fuel in many regions around the world. Onshore and offshore wind farms are being developed at a rapid rate. The following are the five largest onshore wind farms around the world

1. Gansu Wind Farm is located in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) – The wind farm has 7,000 wind turbines which have a total capacity of 7,945 MW. However, 60% of the Gansu Wind Farm’s power capacity is not utilized due to insufficient power transmission lines. The wind farm is located in Gansu province, near the center of the PRC. The PRC government have plans to increase the capacity of the Gansu Wind Farm to 20,000 MW by 2020.

2. Alta Wind Energy Center is located in California, USA – The wind farm has 600 wind turbines which have a total capacity of 1,548 MW. The Alta Wind Energy Center is the largest onshore or offshore wind farm in the United States. Operators of the wind farms have plans to increase the capacity to 3,000 MW.

3. Muppandal Wind Farm is located in Tamil Nadu, India – The wind farm has a total capacity of 1,500 MW. The Muppandal Wind Farm generates 20% of the total wind capacity produced in India.

4. Jaisalmer Wind Park is located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India – The wind park has a total capacity of 1,064 MW.

5. Shepherds Flat Wind Farm is located in Oregon, USA – The wind farm has 338 wind turbines which have a total capacity of 845 MW. The power from the wind farm is sold to Southern California Edison.
