In 2017, the African continent had total wind energy capacity of 5,000 MW. Egypt, Morocco and South Africa have approximately 85% of Africa’s current wind energy capacity. Africa’s total wind energy capacity is forecast to increase to 30,000 MW within the next ten years. Future growth in African wind energy is forecast to occur in Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Tunisia and South Africa. Plans for the continent’s first offshore wind farms have already been announced by the government of South Africa.
