Offshore Wind In New England

Revolution Wind is the name for the 400 MW offshore wind farm, located approximately 15 miles south of the coast of Rhode Island. Construction on the next-generation wind farm is forecast to begin in 2021. Revolution Wind is forecast to begin operations in 2023.

Revolution Wind will be built by Deepwater Wind, which is headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island. Deepwater Wind is an offshore wind energy development company that built the Block Island Wind Farm, the first offshore wind farm in the United States. The Block Island Wind Farm was built off the coast of Rhode Island and commenced operations in December 2016.

Connecticut has committed to buy 200 MW of power from Revolution Wind. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environment Protection has recommended the state double renewable energy to 40% by 2030. Revolution Wind is Connecticut’s first commitment for offshore wind farms.

Revolution Wind is one of many planned offshore wind farms off the New England coast. These wind farm projects have a total capacity of 1,400 MW. Massachusetts and Rhode Island have also committed to purchase 800 MW and 400 MW of offshore wind, respectively.

In my opinion, offshore wind is gaining significant momentum along the eastern seaboard of the United States. I anticipate the offshore wind boom will continue over the next decade and eventually gain momentum on the west coast of the United States.
