The Republic of Uzbekistan has reached an agreement with SkyPower for the construction of 1,000 MW of solar power projects throughout the country. SkyPower is an international developer and operator of utility-scale solar projects and is headquartered in Toronto, Canada.
Uzbekistan and SkyPower also signed a power purchase agreement. The agreement will make SkyPower the first private sector power producer in Uzbekistan. As part of the agreement, SkyPower will work closely with Uzbekenergo, the state-owned utility company.
The solar project will increase the country’s renewable electricity power generation capacity from 2% to 10%. Currently, hydropower is the only source of renewable energy in Uzbekistan. Financing will be provided through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
