The state of Himachal Pradesh is located in the Himalayan Mountains in northern India. The chief minister has recently approved amendments to Himachal Pradesh’s hydropower policies. The new policies are intended to ensure that over seven hundred pending hydropower projects are approved. These projects will provide much needed electrical power to the state and have a total capacity of approximately 5,100 MW.
The undeveloped hydropower potential in Himachal Pradesh is estimated to be approximately 24,000 MW. The state government anticipates the new policies invigorate private investment in the hydropower sector. The chief minister estimates that over US $10 billion will be spent on hydropower projects in Himachal Pradesh by the private sector over the next ten years.
