Scotrenewables Tidal Power Limited (“Scotrenewables”) was founded in 2002 in Orkney, Scotland to develop cost effective floating tidal stream turbines. In 2016, Scotrenewables developed the largest tidal energy converter in the world, 2MW SR2000 turbine. The 2MW SR2000 has successfully completed a twelve-month pilot project, culminating with the production of 116 MWh in under a week of continuous power generation at the European Marine Energy Test Center (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland.
In my opinion, this is a significant development in marine tidal energy. The electricity generated from the 2MW SR2000 could provide a significant amount of power to coastal communities. Diversification of power sources will reduce the demand on the power grid and improve power reliability.
